Business space
to let!!
Nantwich Town Council has a room in
Brookfield Hall available for a small business or local
organisation. Measuring 9 x 12 feet (3 x 4 metres approx.)
the room can be leased for 6 months to a year, maybe longer,
at around £220 per month (negotiable). Use of the kitchen
and other facilities. Currently occupied by a young
translator who operates over the internet, moving on because
his work is increasing, the space would be perfect for a
small organisation or start-up business or someone who needs
reasonably priced office space without long term commitment.

Current Issues...
Town
Councillors are always concerned about the life of the
town. Two current issues are:-
Food
Festival
The Nantwich Food Festival is
an annual event, held on Mill Island. It has been running
now for about 8 years. It brings many visitors to the town
and has a national reputation. It was organised by the
former Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and the Town
Council has always given it support. The new Cheshire East
Council decided it does not wish to run it any more, nor to
pay anything towards it. So Cheshire East asked for
companies or groups interested in taking over the running of
the Food Festival to put forward plans for its future. It
has also said it will gradually reduce any financial
assistance (usually about £20,000 a year) to nil over the
next three years.
There
has always been a committee of Nantwich residents associated
with the Festival and they have come forward with some
proposals. They are supported by the organisers of Nantwich
Show. One of the leaders of the committee is Graham Fenton,
who also happens to be a Town Councillor. The Town Council
considers that a local group, who know Nantwich and the
background of the event, will be the best choice to keep the
Food Festival linked to the town, with a unique “Nantwich
flavour”. The Town Council wish the committee well in their
bid.

Car Parking
Town Councillors have begun a
campaign to get fair car parking charges in Nantwich! Most
Councillors reluctantly accept the need for charges for
parking but feel that the amount paid should be roughly the
same in all the towns in the new Cheshire East Council.
For example, parking in Nantwich is 70p
for an hour, £1 for 2 hours. In Congleton it is likely to
be 30p for an hour, 50p for 2 hours. If Cheshire East
proposals go ahead, Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich and
Sandbach will enjoy free parking.
Town Councillors think that in difficult
economic times, people will be discouraged from shopping in
Nantwich if charges are much higher than other towns. All
market towns in Cheshire are competing against “free”
parking at supermarkets or retail parks and Nantwich
Councillors are simply asking for a level playing field.
They also object to the 50p charge on Sunday, which they say
probably costs as much to collect than it brings in and
amounts to “paying to pray” because it affects church-goers.
The Town Council has passed a resolution
calling on Cheshire East to reconsider charges and
Councillor Arthur Moran, who is also a Cheshire East
Councillor, will be raising the issue at a special committee
of Cheshire East Council formed to look at parking charges.

Chair becomes
Mayor...
In a break with tradition for Nantwich
Town Council, the Council abandoned the title of Chairman
for the first citizen of the town and proclaimed a new
office of Mayor.
Explained Town Clerk, Riddell Graham,
“During the time Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council had a
Mayor, the Town Council felt that to mark the distinction,
their first citizen should be known as ‘Chairman’. However,
when Cheshire East came into being, it was felt that a more
local focus and more local civic figure would be
appropriate. So instead of a Chairman, the Council recently
elected a ‘Mayor’.”
The new Mayor is Councillor Edith
Williams who was appointed in a ceremony at the Council
meeting on 11th May. The meeting was attended by the local
Member of Parliament, Edward Timpson and Mayor of the new
Cheshire East Council, Councillor Margaret Simon. Said new
Town Mayor, Councillor Williams, “I am honoured to represent
the Town of Nantwich as Mayor and look forward to attending
many local community activities as well as the more formal
civic events.”
