On Saturday 15th July Nantwich in Bloom volunteers manned a stall at the Nantwich Societies Spectacular and talked to local residents and visitors about the planting in the town, who were attracted by photographs of ‘blooming Nantwich’ and our ‘Win a planted pot competition’.
Competitors had to identify 5 flowering plants in each pot.
Pot A contained a blue-veined Petunia, a non-stop red Begonia, a red and white flowered ivy-leaved Pelargonium (geranium), a Fuchsia and blue Lobelia. There were many correct entries but Nantwich resident Sylvia’s entry was drawn out of the box to win the planted pot.
Naming the flowers in Pot B was more challenging. They were a blue flowered Salvia ‘Victoria’, Bacopa with small white flowers, Coleus (Solenostemon) with red and green leaves, Phlox with salmon coloured flowers, and Celosia with red and orange plume flowers. Lesley from Nantwich correctly identified four of them and was awarded Pot B as the prize.
However, you don’t have to know the names of plants to volunteer for Nantwich in Bloom, just be willing to join a group of similar minded volunteers and make a difference to the town by planting, weeding, watering beds and containers in the town centre and at Nantwich Railway Station. We also look after the Community Orchard on Nantwich Riverside and are working with other community organisations in environmental and educational projects in the local area.
We run working parties during the year when an hour or two of your time would be appreciated!
